The Water Bottle Station Project

The Water Bottle Station Project (WBSP) consists of monthly data collections that analyze the usage, functionality, and environmental impact of the Elkay EZH20 water bottle stations at Stony Brook University.

WBSP Data Collections

Each month, 15 to 20 trained volunteers filled out surveys for 53 water refill stations to determine the filter status, total fill-ups, and station issues (such as drain and flow problems).

Once the survey results were received, the data was analyzed to determine station issues and filter status. Station popularity and fill-ups were also assessed each month and semester. By recording data in spreadsheets, brief Fix-It reports were created in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability on campus.

By sharing this information with maintenance, the goal was to improve efficiency, reduce costs, diminish waste, and observe social trends for stations over time. Please click on any of the buttons below to see a walk-through of previous research results.
